Lake Forest blows by Shepard

Max Keefe practically begged to return to the football field

Saturday night.

The Lake Forest senior linebacker had been pulled in the third

quarter of a Class 6A opener against visiting Shepard. He and his Scouts had

taken a 45-3 lead, triggering a running clock.

"I wanted to run around some more," said Keefe (11 tackles) after the 45-25

victory. "I was chilly."

His team's offense was too hot for Shepard's ninth-seeded Astros (6-4).

LF's eighth-seeded - and big-play - Scouts amassed 24 points in the second

quarter to take a 31-3 advantage at the break. Their TDs in the frame each

covered 50-plus yards. Jordon Beck tossed a 58-yard pass to Jacob Hellinga;

running back Owen Williams (11 carries, 181 yards, 2 TDs; 2 catches, 57

yards, TD) caught a 56-yard TD pass from Paul Carollo; and Beck connected

with T.J. Jackson for a 54-tally.

Jackson then all but sealed matters at the outset of the second half,

retuning a kickoff 94 yards for another TD. Williams capped his club's

scoring with a 77-yard TD dash on the Scouts' next possession.

"How well and how hard we played, from the first down until the last - that

impressed me," Williams said. "We were so up for this game."

Shepard scored 22 unanswered points after the running clock was established.

Astros senior running back Randall Taylor rushed for an eight-yard TD and caught

28-yard TD from Nick Davis. Jeff Brewer scooted for a three-yard TD.

LF (7-3) visits top-seeded Crystal Lake South (10-0) next week for a

second-round game.
