Boys Basketball: Seton starts fast, rolls by Leo

It is no accident that No. 25 Seton entered Friday night’s Catholic South game against Leo undefeated in conference.

The Sting lives up to its nickname, attacking fast and without warning from the opening tip. For the second time this season, the Lions got a quick taste of the Sting’s swarming defense and balanced offense when they found themselves in a 14-4 first-quarter hole.

Coach Brandon Thomas kept his players fresh, going 11 deep in the first half, and never letting up during an eventual 71-60 win. Just another typical night in conference play for the Sting (18-4, 7-0).

“We challenged the guys and got a lot of production off our bench,” Thomas said. “Our starters got us going and our bench guys fed off of that.”

Sting starting guard Mark Weems Jr. was one of those players challenged by Thomas. The 6-foot-2 guard finished with a team-high 18 points, and had four of his five rebounds in the fourth quarter.

“No reason why he hasn’t had a double-double with his rebounding ability,” Thomas said.

Kamai Shasi added 16 points, Jordan Foster had 11, while the bench contributed 13 points, nine rebounds, and helped force a portion of the 18 turnovers and continuous forced shots by the Lions (12-12, 4-4).

The two teams last met in early December when the Sting won easily 95-66. In that game the Lions were without 6-7 junior Russell Woods, who was out for “school reasons,” according to coach Noah Cannon.

“He was out for the first 10 games of the season,” said Cannon of Woods, who finished with 19 points and 12 rebounds. “We have to hit our free throws, we were 16-for-35 and that was the game.”

Woods was 5-for-14 from the line. Sean Moore Jr. added 12 points for the Lions.
