Schurz guaranteed its Big Shoulders finale against Taft Friday will determine third place with a 27-0 route over Amundsen last Friday at Jorndt Field.
"This was probably one of the best team wins we had all year," Schurz head coach Peter Fosco said. "The offense and the defense played well."
Quarterback Joe Sparacino, who did not play in Schurz' Week 6 win over Lake View because of a concussion, gave the Bulldogs a 7-0 lead with a one-yard run that capped a 92-yard drive on the Bulldogs first possession.
Sparacino extended the lead to 14-0 when he connected with Alan Feeney on a 35-yard score.
"Sparacino has a lot of experience. He was our quarterback last year and has been playing quarterback for a long time," Fosco said. "Feeney is a great athlete. He can play receiver, tight end and cornerback. Having two great athletes on the field is great."
Despite holding a 14-0 halftime advantage, Fosco was not pleased with the defensive effort.
"The offense was playing well, but the defense was lackluster," He said. "We were hoping to play better in the second half, and we did. They played with a lot more emotion."
Amundsen took the kickoff and marched downfield, but the drive stalled when Schurz' defensive tackles Frank White and Humberto Ramos stuffed a fourth-and-one.
The Vikings next possession ended when safety Eric Solis intercepted a pass and returned it 65 yards for a score to extend the Bulldogs lead to 20-0. The extra point failed.
Solis (20 carries, 90 yards) concluded the scoring when he broke a 20-yard run.
"This was a big win for us," Fosco said. "The young kids on our offensive line are really starting to mature. We have a chance to really peak at the right time."
The Bulldogs (4-3, 2-2) will look to extend their winning streak to three when they battle Taft, 7 p.m. Friday at Lane Stadium. Taft (3-4, 3-1) beat Clemente 21-14 last Thursday at Jorndt Field.
"Taft is a really good team," Fosco said. "(Head coach Matt) Walsh and (assistant coach Nick) Nishibayashi are doing a great job of coaching. We have to stop their quarterback. He might be the best player in the conference. He can throw and run. If we can contain him we can win.
"Our goal now is to beat Taft and get into the (Public League) playoffs. We want to see how far we can go with these young kids. It will be great experience for them. The more they can play the better they will be when they come back next year."
