If all else goes according to schedule -- which is asking a lot considering the delays already incurred -- Schaumburg's JV and varsity boys soccer teams could christen the school's new field Oct. 1 against Elk Grove.

Athletic director Tim Kirby said Monday that construction crews were planning on installing the synthetic turf either Monday or Tuesday. He said the time needed for the last phase takes anywhere from seven to 10 days.

Kirby also disputed a report about the reason for the latest delay. While a cement truck did damage a drainage culvert, he said the error occurred where the track is going, adding that the installation of the turf wasn't affected. The ultimate cause for the postponement was the heavy rain storm that passed through town, making it impossible for crews to work.

Rains to blame

"They were at the gravel stage and trucks couldn't get to the quarries," he said.

Schaumburg's sophomore and varsity football games against Fremd scheduled for Friday have been moved to Saturday at Conant High School. The sophomores start at 11 a.m., and the varsity is scheduled to kick off at 1:30 p.m.

Homecoming festivities have been switched to the Saxons' Oct. 17 game against Conant.

"It's our last home game of the season, and we hope the seniors can play on our new field," Kirby said.
