Yorkville, Sandwich settle for split
Saturday's softball doubleheader between Yorkville and Sandwich was delayed two hours by rain, and the Yorkville bats seemed to followed suit.
Scoring runs isn't usually a problem for the Foxes, but they managed just four hits against Sandwich pitcher Morgan Murphy in a 3-2 loss in the first game, and trailed 3-1 in game two before tacking on six runs and earning the split with a 7-4 win.
"We did not hit the ball as well as we are capable of hitting," said Yorkville coach Kathi Dockstader. "We had a rough day. We told the kids there are going to be days that we won't hit well, and we have to find other ways to score, be aggressive on the bases and take advantage of the situation."
Yorkville had eight hits in Game 2, but took advantage of some Sandwich miscues to take the lead for good in the fourth inning. After a solo homer by Hannah Prucha and an RBI double by Gina Lorusso put the Indians ahead 3-1 in the fourth inning, the Foxes pushed across three runs on just one hit.
Cacey Maciejewski had an RBI groundout to cut the deficit in half, but with runners on second and third, Sandwich pitcher Emma Darby threw a wild pitch that allowed Sonja Gilbertson and Devin Turner to both cross the plate to make it a 4-3 game.
Yorkville later added three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth on RBI by Turner and Nicole Hersam.
Prucha had a solid day at the plate for Sandwich. Her two-run double in the third put Yorkville ahead 2-1 in Game 1, and she went 4-for-4 in the second game and doubled along with her home run. The junior went 5-for-7 with a walk and two runs scored on the day.
"(The homer) was awesome, it was my first one that went over the fence," Prucha said. "If the ball was there (Saturday) I just hit it, and I just wanted to get on base."
Yorkville now stands at 7-4 on the season, while Sandwich is 3-5.
