Amid bugs, Sandwich takes 2nd

SANDWICH -- The seemingly infinite number of mosquitoes and other swamp-like, biting insects not withstanding, the Plano, Sandwich, Somonauk and Rockford Lutheran girls golf teams had ideal conditions to play on Wednesday afternoon at the Edgebrook Golf Club as blue skies and cool temperatures reigned over a course that was partly submerged by flood waters just a week earlier.

"The bugs were crazy, but (the course) was good considering all the rain we had," Sandwich sophomore Hannah Rebhorn said after posting the Indians' low score with a 14-over-par 51.

But not even Rebhorn's best round of the year, which included a beautiful 12-foot putt on the par-4 eighth hole, was enough to track down Rockford Lutheran's Cynthia Bounleutay, who was drilling straight-as-an-arrow drives up the fairway all afternoon en route to medalist honors with a 7-over 44.

Rockford Lutheran posted the four low rounds of the meet - all 49 and under - and took first with 190 points. Sandwich followed with 222, as Somonauk (254) and Plano (271) took third and fourth, respectively.

The Indians, who practiced on the back nine at Edgebrook on Tuesday to regain some familiarity with their home course after last week's flooding, also received solid rounds from senior Brenna Keene (52) and sophomore Blaire Wright, who carded a 56.

Plano freshman Maggie Benoit was thinking about hitting the ball over the net in volleyball this fall, but it seems like she made the right choice by knocking the ball in the hole, as she posted the Reapers' low score with a personal-best 62.

"It's been a little overwhelming because this is the first year I've really played golf," Benoit said.

Kelsey Maton shot 69 and Kelly McGinnis 66 for Plano, which returns to Edgebrook this afternoon to take on Huntley and host Sandwich.

Somonauk sophomore Abbie Peterson shot the low round for the Bobcats with a 23-over 60.

"I could have done a lot better - my putting was bad - but I was happy with my round," said Peterson, whose best round of the season is 51.

Freshman Kelly Garrey shot a 61, while Brittany Cain, the Bobcats' only senior, couldn't deal with the 2,627-yard front 9 as well as she did with the pesky bugs.

"(My round) wasn't very good," Cain said after signing her card with a 29-over 66. "It was a combination (of the driving and the short game)." Girls Golf
