Zion-Benton’s football team celebrated Homecoming with a 28-27 overtime win over pesky Round Lake 28-27 on Friday in a non-division game.
Both teams scored on 10-yard touchdown runs in overtime — Carlton Reynolds for Zion and Anthony Burton for Round Lake — but Hannah Magiera’s extra-point kick proved to be the difference for the Bees, as Burton’s two-point conversion run failed.
Zion (2-4) had held a 21-7 halftime lead before the Panthers rallied.
Burton (12-for-18 passing, 122 yards) led the comeback in the second half — rushing for a touchdown and tossing a touchdown pass to Anthony Gutierrez with 7:04 remaining to tie the game at 21-21.
Sean Schinkle (13 carries, 107 yards), Derek Reynolds (30-yard touchdown pass from Carlton Reynolds) and Carlton Reynolds (67-yard touchdown run) accounted for Zion’s scores.
Daniel Vega also had a 15-yard touchdown run for Round Lake (1-5) in the first half.
