Roosevelt-Wallace to resume again today
Updated: May 9, 2012 9:50AM
Roosevelt jumped out to the lead early in this one thanks to a blocked Wallace punt that was recovered by the Panthers at the Hornets’ 5-yard line. One play later, Panthers running back Jerry Ruiz, subbing for injured starter Johnnie Frazier, scored from 5 yards out to give Roosevelt the lead 6-0 in the second quarter.
Add a Ruiz 2-yard run for two and the Panthers had an 8-0 lead.
Wallace tightened the game on its next possession with quarterback DeMonyae Collier scoring from a yard out to make it 8-6 before the Panthers responded.
Receiver Nigel Coles took an end around handoff from Deron Downton 11 yards for a TD to make the score 14-6 before lightning forced both teams to their respective locker rooms.
Wallace coach Al Williams was especially vocal in wanting to continue the game one way or another. Hard to blame him. His Hornets are one victory away from their first four-win season since 2003.
But if they want to make that happen, it wouldn’t be a bad idea for the Hornets to pack some stick-em. Friday night, the Hornets dropped several passes, including a possible third-quarter TD pass that could have tied the game and another pick-six opportunity in the third.
On the other hand, Roosevelt is 8:08 away from its first Northwestern Conference win since 2009, when the Panthers beat Wallace 30-22. A Roosevelt win would give the Panthers their first multi-win season since 2007, when they picked up five wins.
The Panthers went to work toward that goal right at the get-go, using an onside kick to begin the game. The Panthers recovered at the Wallace 43-yard line.
The Panthers offense didn’t take advantage of the field position, but it did set up an entire first quarter in which the game was played on the Wallace side of the field, and eventually led to Ruiz’s touchdown.
