As the play developed, Garrett Peterson could not believe his good fortune.
Rolling Meadows led 28-21 over Buffalo Grove when Peterson touched the ball. He turned the counter draw into a 69-yard touchdown to spark the host Mustangs to a 41-21 victory Thursday night.
“When the hole opened up, my eyes lit up,” Peterson said. “Once I got into the secondary, I was off to the races.”
Peterson finished the contest with 171 yards on 13 carries. He reached the end zone twice, as his 13-yard run closed the scoring. The back was quick to share the glory with the offensive line of Kevin Puleo, Nick Leidecker, Alexis Rojas, Matt Long and Mark Schmid.
“My line worked their butts off in practice,” Peterson said. “They were making huge blocks all game. Without them, none of this would have happened.”
Rolling Meadows (5-2, 2-1) also enjoyed a monster first half from quarterback Jack Milas. He connected on 14-of-17 passes in the first two quarters for 158 yards. Milas tossed TD passes to Artie Cheechin (26 yards and 20 yards) and Peterson (9 yards).
“He (Milas) is an amazing quarterback,” Peterson said.
Milas attempted two passes in the second half (both were incomplete).
Buffalo Grove (1-6, 0-3) fought hard throughout the contest. The leaders on the ground were quarterback Richie Zirngibl (19-98, TD), halfback John Pallister (17-94, TD) and fullback Nick Catino (11-66, TD).
Catino carried the ball 10 times in the second half for 56 yards.
“Nick normally plays tight end, but we wanted to get as many physical guys as possible at the point of attack,” said Bison coach Jim Farrell. “Nick is a monster (6-foot-3, 235 pounds). No one wanted to stand in front of him.”
