Rich South fends off late surge by Rich East

Host Rich South held off a late rally by Rich East to win 28-20 in the Southland Conference on Friday night.
The Stars (3-4, 3-1) took advantage of two first- quarter fumbles by the Rockets (5-2, 2-1) to take a 14-0 lead. Rich South’s Shaquille Jones not only recovered a Rich East fumbled punt at the East 19, he carried the ball in from the 3-yard line three plays later to make it 6-0. Two possessions later, Rich East fumbled at its own 29. On the next play, Stars quarterback Brendon Zachery hit brother Jaylen Zachery for a 29-yard touchdown pass. The 2-point conversion made it 14-0.
Rich South running back DeAndre Washington scored on a 5-yard run to make it 21-0 with 5:10 to play in the first half. Washington, who rushed for 165 yards on 28 carries, added a 3-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter.
Rich East scored touchdowns on a 12-yard run by Richard White III and Cameron Smith’s 4-yard run that made it 21-14 with 11:11 to play in the fourth quarter. Rich East drove 96 yards in the last three minutes to get to within 28-20 on a 21-yard TD pass from quarterback Malcolm Miller to Anthony Perkins. Rich South recovered the ensuing onside kick with 17 second left in the game.
