Posada nets four goals for Crete

Rich East had an interesting strategy when asked how to stop Crete-Monee forward Carlos Posada in Tuesday’s Southland match in Crete.

“We gave up four goals to him last time, so we don’t (stop him),” Rich East coach Matthew Shank said. “He’s not chasing a record for nothing.”

Shank’s prediction was dead-on. Posada scored four goals, putting him six goals behind Billy Savarino’s state record of 159 with Brother Rice and propelling Crete-Monee to a 6-0 win over East.

Crete-Monee coach Julian Lagunas said the record is weighing on Posada.

“It’s been coming up a lot,” Lagunas said. “He’s even admitted it’s been affecting him. He’s even said, ‘Just let me get it over with. I want to be done with this.’ ”

Posada didn’t waste much time Tuesday, scoring seven minutes into the game when Daniel Tucker found him for a breakaway.

Two minutes later, Posada sent a beautiful pass from 30 yards out to Jake Cogan just outside the box to make it 2-0. Cogan returned the favor with just under six minutes in the half, finding Posada in the box for a header that made it 3-0.

Just over a minute later, Posada drove from 30 yards out and beat the goalie to make it 4-0 at the break.

Posada sent a corner kick to Ryan Sadowski for a header with 26:57 remaining in the game. Sadowski returned the favor, finding Posada on a breakaway to make it 6-0 in favor of Crete-Monee (13-2-2, 6-1) with 19:09 left in the match. Lagunas then took Posada out for the remainder of the game.

After being blanked by Bloom in his previous game, Posada said after Tuesday’s match that he felt some of the weight of the record had been lifted.

“It isn’t weighing on me as much now,” Posada said. “I only need six goals in three games plus playoffs.”

Rich East fell to 5-10, 1-5 in the conference.
