Homewood-Flossmoor its two-game sweep over neighboring rival No. 17 Rich Central on Monday night. After beating the Olympians 57-46 at the Marist Thanksgiving classic, No. 23 H-F took care of business at home, handing Rich Central a 56-40 loss.
“(Central) is one of our top rivals,” H-F guard Danielle Woolfolk said. “There was a lot of talking out there, but we know their team and how to get the job done.”
It was a streaky and physical game, and one in which Rich Central played without head coach Bryan Craig, starting guard Alex Stanford, and 6-1 post player Layne Murphy. The trio were out serving standard IHSA suspensions after being ejected from Thursday’s win over Bloom Township.
H-F (7-3) capitalized on the lack of ball handlers the Olympians dressed, and used a full court press to force a bevy of turnovers.
“We were limited with guards today, and when we got into some foul trouble, they’re pressure really put is in a tight squeeze,” said Olympian assistant coach Errol Dice.
With H-F up 25-19 at the half, Rich Central (8-3) tied the contest early in the third quarter on a bucket from Jessica Warren (six points, five blocks). But the H-F pressure reasserted itself, and Woolfolk began to find her range.
Woolfolk led a furious third quarter charge to catalyze the cold shooting Vikings. The senior scored 10 of her 23 points in the period, and then twisted the knife with a three-pointer to open the final frame for a 43-32 lead.
“As a shooter, you just have to keep letting it go,” said Woolfolk. “I was missing my shots in the first half, but once I got one in, I just kept rolling.”
Chaz Duson paced the Olympians with 21 points.
