A balanced attack to start the game and a whole lot of Caitlin McMahon to finish it. That was the formula for the Lincoln-Way East girls basketball team as it beat Richards 56-36 Saturday.

Seven Griffins scored before the half for a 27-19 lead. McMahon then came out looking to take charge after the intermission. The senior netted 10 of the Griffins’ 12 third-quarter points and finished with a game-high 18.

The win capped a three-game romp for the Griffins through the Bobby Bolton Classic, a tournament held at Richards. Lincoln-Way East (4-0) won the title by beating opponents by an average of 24 points per game.

“Everyone knows their role and bought into it early in the season,” Lincoln-Way East coach Rick Martin said. “Today, it was Caitlin who did a good job of finishing. She’s tough when she goes strong to the basket and doesn’t fade away.”

McMahon also battled in the post against Richards standout Brianna LeBeau, limiting LeBeau to 10 points and three boards, one game after the Richards forward pulled down 15 rebounds.

“In the previous games of the tournament, I hadn’t played someone as strong as (LeBeau),’’ McMahon said. “I just focused on boxing her out and getting around her when I could.”

Guard Hannah Jenkins (14 points) had a strong showing for Richards (2-1). Jenkins led an 8-0 charge in the third quarter to cut the Lincoln-Way East lead to 12.

McMahon came right back for East, scoring after an offensive rebound for a 14-point lead going into the fourth quarter.

“I was just getting lucky,” McMahon said. “I came out in the third quarter with a lot of energy and looking to score.”

Taylor Johnson (9 points) and Meaghan McMahon (8 points) also had strong showings for the Griffins.
