Reavis rolls over Richards

Paul Rychtarczyk and his Reavis teammates have heard all the criticisms of soccer: too slow, too boring, not enough scoring.

So in game action, Rychtarczyk loves nothing more than proving the doubters wrong.

Just 82 seconds into Monday's South Suburban Red match vs. Richards, the sophomore forward scored a goal, his seventh of the season, helping the Rams run away to a 9-0 shutout in Burbank.

"It's awesome to score a goal so soon," Rychtarczyk said. "It gets the whole team pumped up to play, and everyone starts playing aggressive, score as fast as they can."

The goal came on a pass into the box, with Rychtarczyk fielding the ball with his left foot and putting it past Richards goalie Martin Uzzardo in the top left corner.

"I was a little unsure about (fielding it) because my right foot is stronger, but I got it and scored the goal," Rychtarczyk said.

Reavis (5-1, 2-0) scored five goals in the first 20 minutes of play, with junior midfielder Erick Vargas scoring his first of two goals less than three minutes after Rychtarczyk's. On a pass from Kevin Taraszka, Vargas deposited the ball in the net to put Reavis up 2-0.

Vargas' second goal saw the Rams take advantage of a possession when Uzzardo was pulled away from the net trying to field the ball. Mario Waksmundzki's pass set up Vargas in front of the net to give Reavis the three-goal advantage.

"We had some good passes today," Vargas said. "Defense-wise, we were good too. We were all-around good."

The goals kept coming in the first half, as sophomore Luis Garcia scored twice, including one on a penalty kick, and junior midfielder Chris Martinez adding one of his own.

Entering the game, Reavis had played only once in the past two weeks, but coach Bob Morack was pleased with his team's effort.

"We wanted to see our guys push it," Morack said. "Obviously, you don't want to demoralize the other team, but we have a lot of good players this year, and we wanted to see what they had."

Waksmundzki and junior midfielders Greg Letocha and Fernando Albarran each scored a goal in the second half as Reavis notched its fifth shutout of the season.
