At first he was modest in calling it “a fluke.” But then, Keegen Holbrook recalled what he told his dad, Bob, before last season’s Quad County Association youth tournament.
“I told him I had a good shot at getting my first (300),” Keegen said.
And that’s exactly what the Rensselaer graduate did in what he said was his last year of youth bowling before heading to adult leagues in the fall, though he wished his first perfect game wouldn’t have been so quick.
“It came too early — in the first game,” he said. “I really wanted 800, but I only had 180-something in the second game.”
The 300 came in the first game of doubles. He also had the first nine strikes in the third game for a shot at perfect game No. 2 before finishing with a 277 and 763 series to help take both scratch and handicap doubles titles with his partner Paige Kraushaar.
Later he added a 279 game and 664 series in singles to take that scratch title.
In all, Holbrook had seven Quad County titles — he finished second in handicap singles — and added a 206 league average at Hebron Lanes to earn Post-Tribune Boys Bowler of the Year honors.
“The Quad County tourney has treated me well,” he said, recalling that he rolled his first 700 (706) in the event a couple years ago.
Not getting the 800 is actually part of a competition between Keegen and his dad, neither of whom have earned an 800 ring from the USBC yet.
“I’ve always looked up to him,” Keegen said. “He has a handful of 300s, but he’s still trying for that 800 too. We’re kind of racing to see who gets it first.”
Their passion for the sport should be no surprise since the Holbrooks are a bowling family. Keegen’s brother Kyler also bowled for Rensselaer and their grandfather William had owned the small bowling alley in Rensselaer before it was bought by George Barton and the name changed to Strike Zone.
Up next for Keegen is attending Purdue University for academics while keeping his options open for college bowling down the road. He’ll also be bowling in an adult league with his dad in which both will be looking for that elusive 800 series.
Joining Holbrook on the P-T all-star first team are Brad Fisher, who won three Calumet Junior Bowling Association titles, had a 300 game and finished third in the P-T Tournament; Tyler Hansen, who finished top 12 in three events in the state tourney; Nate Maciejewski, who won two CBJA titles and placed fifth in state all-events; and Joe Miller, who won a CBJA title and rolled his first sanctioned 300.
