Ivory Crawford said it is about time the Proviso East girls' basketball team get the same kind of recognition of the school's heralded boys' team.
"I think we're better than them," the Illinois-bound senior star guard said. Despite sitting out the final 10 minutes of the game, Crawford scored 21 points and recorded six rebounds, five steals and five assists to power the No. 8 Pirates to the 79-42 rout over Proviso West Saturday in Maywood.
Crawford scored 19 in the first half in leading the Pirates to a 48-23 lead at the break. She scored 11 points during the second quarter as the Pirates utilized an 18-2 run to seize control. "We did what we were supposed to do," Crawford said. "Our pressure bothered them, and we were able to get out and run."
Stacey Welch hit a three-pointer and scored seven of her 13 points during a 15-5 run at the start of the third quarter. Kalea Parker added nine points and Jakeisha Wells added eight for the Pirates. Twelve different players scored for the Pirates.
"We have a lot of depth and a lot of people that can score," Proviso East coach Ezra PridGeon said. "Our whole thing is being able to dictate the tempo, that's the key to our team and we were able to do that today."
Freshman guard Mikaela Boyd scored 17 points to lead the Panthers (16-13). Jasmine Jackson added 14 points.
