Proviso West quarterback Quincy Cole and wide receiver Demetrius Streeter were working in perfect unison Saturday afternoon as the pair powered the Panthers past arch-rival Proviso East 41-7 in Maywood.
Cole and Streeter hooked up for three first-half touchdowns and Cole ran for two more as the Pirates were overwhelmed, trailing 34-0 at halftime.
“I’m pretty comfortable with him,” said Cole, who threw four touchdowns while completing 18 of 23 passes for 292 yards. “We had a lot of offseason work together and we just hooked up a lot.”
Cole (eight carries, 29 yards) got Proviso West (3-1) off to a great start, rushing for a pair of one-yard touchdowns to give the Panthers a 13-0 lead.
An interception by Jamaal Payton gave the Panthers the ball back and Streeter (four catches, 99 yards) took a screen pass for a 30-yard touchdown.
Proviso West forced a fumble and recovered it on the ensuing kickoff. On the very next play Streeter made a spectacular diving catch in the back of the end zone on a stop-and-go route to push the Panthers lead to 27-0.
Cole and Streeter hooked up for one more touchdown before the half, another screen pass that went for 18 yards.
“It all starts with the lineman,” Streeter said. “They have to set the screen. I just saw an opening and hit it.”
Proviso West, which scored on all five of its first-half possessions, found the end zone to start the second half as Cole tossed his fourth touchdown of the day, this time an 18 yarder to Craig Lottie (seven catches, 79 yards).
Proviso East finally got on the scoreboard as Langdon Johnson took the ensuing kickoff 81 yards for a touchdown.
Trashawn Harper (three catches, 62 yards) and Dantrell Garner (four catches, 52 yards) also contributed for the Panthers.
