Hinsdale Central looked to get even Friday night against the team that knocked the Devils out of last year’s playoffs.

Despite trailing by seven points at halftime, Proviso West showed plenty of patience in the second half.

The Panthers scored on each of their first two drives and even scored on one of Hinsdale Central’s drives on a safety. Proviso West rolled 30-22 Friday night in the West Suburban Silver opener for both teams in Hinsdale.

The Devils were hoping to avenge a loss to Proviso West in last year’s season finale, which ended an 11-year run of playoff appearances for Hinsdale Central (2-1, 0-1). But it was all Proviso West (2-1, 1-0) in the second half.

The Panthers scored 23 consecutive points in the second half, 16 in the third quarter on Quincy Cole’s 30-yard TD pass to Demetrius Streeter and a 1-yard touchdown run by Ishmeal Akui.

Hinsdale Central ran six plays in the third quarter to Proviso West’s 24. The Devils fumbled on their second play out of the half and then the Panthers went up 23-14 when the center snap at the Devils’ 20 skipped past quarterback Danny Callahan and into the end zone.

The Devils ended Proviso West’s scoring burst with Brad Anlauf’s second touchdown reception, a 16-yard pass from Danny Callahan with 5:02 remaining in the fourth quarter. The score and Callahan’s two-point conversion run pulled the Devils to within 30-22.

The Devils gained their first lead, going up 14-7, with just six seconds remaining in the second quarter. Junior Brian Owens engineered an eight-play, 82-yard drive in barely more than one minute. He capped the drive with an 8-yard score to Tommy Delzenero that gave Hinsdale Central a 14-7 lead.

Owens went 6-for-8 for 73 yards passing during the drive. The Devils did not attempt a run during its hurry-up offense and were boosted by a Proviso West pass interference penalty that brought the ball to the Panthers’ 8-yard line.

Both quarterbacks were on target in the first half. Owens completed eight consecutive passes during the first half and Proviso West’s Quincy Cole completed seven in a row after starting off with three incompletions.

Proviso West scored first in the second quarter on Trashawn Harper’s 14-yard run for a score off a draw play to the right side. That scoring drive came after the Panthers were stopped at the Hinsdale 1 when Jamaal Payton was buried at the goal line.

Hinsdale Central tied the game with 2:20 to go in the second quarter when Owens completed a 16-yard touchdown pass to Brad Anlauf, who was left open when a Panthers cornerback slipped in the end zone.

Owens played the entire first half for the first time this season. Since starting the season against St. Charles North, Owens has alternated quarters with senior Danny Callahan during the entire season. Callahan played the entire second half,

Proviso West beat the Devils 34-20 in Hillside last season.
