Late field goal lifts Dukes

York junior Sean McDaid kicked a 37-yard field goal with 65 seconds left in

the fourth quarter to give the Dukes (4-0, 2-0) a 16-14 win over Proviso

West (3-1, 0-1) in a West Suburban Conference Silver Division game on Friday

in Elmhurst.

"It's unbelievable," McDaid said. "I can't explain it. I had confidence in

my line, snapper and holder. I do this a bunch of times in practice."

York decided to go for the field goal on a fourth-and-two play with the

outcome hanging in the balance.

"I thought about (the decision) until I saw it go through," York coach Bill

Lech said. "I knew he had the leg. Boy does he have the leg."

"That kid is a Division I kicker," Proviso West coach Famous Hulbert said.

York opened the scoring on an eight-yard run by Ryan Kent (25 carries, 80 yards)

in the second quarter to go up 7-0.

Proviso West answered on a 4-yard run by Julius Johnson (19 carries, 95

yards) to tie the game at 7-7.

York went up 13-7 with 38 seconds to play until halftime on a 30-yard pass

from quarterback Jim Nudera (13 completions, 141 yards) to Jordan Preuss.

A two-yard run by Proviso West quarterback Malik Thurman (11 completions, 147

yards) put the Panthers up 14-13 with 6:05 to play in

Quarter 3.

"Our mental mistakes finally caught up with us," Hulbert said.
