Sewall's interception seals the deal for Lyons

Lyons Township senior defensive back Mark Sewall intercepted a pass with

just under two minutes to play in the fourth quarter to preserve a 17-14 victory over Proviso West in a West Suburban Conference Silver Division game on Friday in Hillside.

Sewall made the pick at the Lyons 6-yard line on a fourth-and-seven play for

the Panthers (4-2, 1-3).

"Big time players make big time plays," Lyons coach Kurt Weinberg said. "Our

defense bends and gives up a lot of yardage, but not many points."

"I had a feeling they were going to the single side," Sewall said. "I heard

them talking about it on the sideline. He (Proviso West tight end Clarence

Heath) tried to make me bite inside."

Lyons went up 7-0 with 3 minutes, 9 seconds to play in the first quarter on

a 1-yard run by quarterback Brian Kelley.

Kelley threw a 31-yard TD pass to Chris Klotz with 81 seconds left in the

first half to put Lyons (6-1, 4-1) ahead 14-0 at halftime.

Proviso West got on the scoreboard midway in the third quarter on a 26-yard

pass from quarterback Malik Thurman to Clarence Heath (6 catches, 80 yards).

LT added a 20-yard field goal by Mike Pett in the third quarter which turned

out to be the margin of victory.

Jamaal Payton scored on a 4-yard run to close the gap to 17-14 with 9:46 to

play.

The first touchdown for Lyons (6-1, 4-1) was set up on a blocked punt by

Michael Thomas and recovered by Matthew Harris at the Proviso West 6.

Four plays later quarterback Brian Kelley went in from 1 yard out with 3

minutes, 9 seconds to play in the first quarter.

Lyons put together an 84-yard, 9 play drive for its second touchdown after

keeping Proviso West (4-3, 1-3) from scoring on fourth-and-goal from the 6.

The drive culminated with a 31 yard TD pass from Kelley to Chris Klotz in

the left corner of the end zone with 1:21 to play in the first half to

extend the lead to 14-0.
