Girls Basketball: Cassidy Glenn’s big game lifts Providence past Plainfield Central

With their best players back in the lineup after ACL injuries last season, Plainfield Central and Providence aren’t hurting for victories.
Providence forward Cassidy Glenn and Plainfield Central guard Brigid Hanley have led their teams’ resurgence this season and Monday night they showcased their talents in a closely contested nonconference game at Central.
Glenn, a 5-foot-11 senior, scored a game-high 32 points to give her 1,013 points for her career and she grabbed 14 rebounds in the Celtics’ 60-55 victory.
“I didn’t know I was so close to 1,000,’’ Glenn said with a smile. “When my coach told me, I was really happy. The game had to continue, but I’m still really happy about it.’’
“She’s doing a great job for us and just getting stronger as the season goes on,’’ Providence coach Eileen Copenhaver said.
Glenn suffered an ACL injury in February and missed three games at the end of last season.
“Each week, each game, we feel like she’s getting stronger and stronger,’’ Copenhaver said. “That’s a tough injury. She’s not even one year out of it yet.’’
Providence (8-8) also got key contributions Monday from Sam Rohrer (10 points) and freshman Alyssa Jurges (8 points).
“Sam definitely comes through at tough times in games,’’ Glenn said.
The third quarter was a turning point as Providence outrebounded Central 14-7 and took advantage of 10 Wildcats turnovers in the period to grab a 42-36 lead after a 29-all tie at halftime.
“I just felt like we needed to rebound more because they had way too many offensive boards,’’ Glenn said. “Once we got that in our minds, the ball just came our way and our game improved.’’
Providence had a 10-4 advantage on the boards in the fourth quarter to help maintain its lead.
“That’s the key to the game,’’ Glenn said. “Our coach definitely put that in our minds.’’
Providence opened the fourth quarter with an 8-0 run to go ahead 50-36 with 5:45 to play. Central (9-7) closed the gap to 56-52 on two free throws by Hanley with 25 seconds left. A three-pointer from Nicole Pease made it 58-55 with 4 seconds to play before Anna Novak’s two free throws sealed the Celtics’ win.
“The one thing about this team, we battle,’’ Central coach Mark Krusz said. “There’s no deficit that’s too big for us.’’
Hanley led Central with 21 points, while Emily Obradovich (8 points, 7 rebounds) and Lauren Kulaga (8 points) also were key for the Wildcats.
“We’ve got a lot of confidence in what we’re doing,’’ Krusz said. “We’ve got a great player in Brigid Hanley, who likes to distribute the ball.’’
