The season-long goal of reaching the state tournament remained the top priority for Sandburg Friday night.

But to get to next Tuesday’s Sandburg Sectional final, the Eagles had to crash their way through a roadblock that plagued them the last three seasons.

Each of the last three years ended with a loss in the sectional semifinals, including a three-set heartbreaker to Providence in 2010.

Sandburg broke the streak this time around, defeating Providence 25-16, 25-18.

‘‘This was a great win, and it was a year to the day from when we lost last year to them,’’ Sandburg’s Bill Siroky said. ‘‘Some of the seniors had that on our mind, and we came out and played well.’’

Siroky had nine kills and four blocks for Sandburg (35-3), which got 25 assists from Scott Fifer. The Eagles will play Marist Tuesday at 7 p.m. for the sectional title.

In front of a raucous home crowd, Sandburg knocked Providence out early, going on a 14-4 run to the start Game 1. The Celtics never recovered as the Eagles front line dominated.

‘‘We feel like our height and skill at the net can take anybody out of their game,’’ Siroky said. ‘‘When the blocking is on, were know were playing our best.’’

Providence (23-10) was led by Casey Contorno (five kills) and Tim Sanders (four kills).

‘‘Our passing broke down early, and it took us out of the game early,’’ Providence coach Brett Krapil said. ‘‘There were spurts we fought back, but against Sandburg youve got to do that from the beginning.’’
