After missing a 23-yard field goal late in the third quarter, Dejan Basara converted a 38-yard field goal with 1:23 left in the game to lift Elk Grove to a 24-21 Mid-Suburban East victory Thursday over host Prospect.

“I just knew what I had to do,” said Basara.

His kick capped a seven-play, 13-yard drive.

Prospect went 59 yards on five plays on its final drive, which ended at Elk Grove’s eight-yard line. The Knights were unable to spike the ball in time to set up what would’ve been a 25-yard field goal attempt.

Elk Grove’s Adam O’Malley had 154 passing yards and a touchdown.

Prospect’s Sam Frasco had 119 rushing yards and two touchdowns in the first half, finishing with 132 yards rushing, 60 yards passing.

Elk Grove (6-1, 3-0) racked up 172 rushing yards, led by an 85-yard, two-touchdown performance by Stefan Skoneczka.

Elk Grove got on the board first with a 12-play, 63-yard touchdown drive capped by a Skoneczka touchdown run.

Prospect (3-4, 2-1) countered with a four-play, 53-yard drive capped by a touchdown run from Frasco.

The quarterbacks would trade punches through the first half, making it a 21-14 Prospect lead at the half.

Elk Grove would not score again the rest of the game – punting on four of the last six drives.

Meanwhile, Elk Grove thundered to 10 unanswered points, including Basara’s game-winning field goal.
