Wolves' Covers has eyes on prize

Prairie Ridge's Jenny Covers might not need a new car. But the Prairie Ridge Senior, who was the state all-around champion in 2009 and third last year, has her eyes set on even a bigger prize.

"I was really disappointed on my performance last year," Covers said. "I am definitely geared up for this season. I just want to go out my senior year with a bang."

So Covers spent the summer working out four hours per day at least five days per week. She has improved her skills and endurance.

"I am stronger both physically and mentally," Covers said. "I don't think I have anything to prove, but I am looking for redemption in my own mind."

That tough mindset has been the driving force that has turned Covers from a cheerleader into one of the most sought-after gymnasts in the country. She signed in February to the University of Minnesota, the same school where Fremd's MaryAnne Kelley attended.

Covers has another goal this year. She hopes to lead the Wolves to a state title, after their fourth place finish last year.

"I think we are up to the challenge," Covers said. "We have some new girls to go with our core from last year."

Prairie Ridge coach Lee Battaglia is also high on his team this year. He has Covers, Heather Kill and Brittany Potts returning from last year. They have also added level 10 gymnast Nikki Novak and Level 9 gymnast Danielle Dyra. The Wolves have also added Leonard Isaacs as an assistant coach.

"We are bringing the team along slow," Battaglia said. "It is a long season and we need to get lots of girls meet experience. But we will be strong in the end."
