Indian Creek tops Plano

Aside from the drizzle, Indian Creek's homecoming victory had everything.

Flowers for the mothers joining fathers in escorting the seniors, fan-billowed red and black streamers for the Timberwolves' starters to run through, cannon blasts, 270-plus spectators huddled under blankets or watching from cars stretching from beyond one endline past the opposite one and a rousing halftime performance by the IC dance team, and of course, a 3-0 victory over Plano.

After punctuating the national anthem's conclusion with a cannon blast, the Alpha unit of the 2-122 Field Artillery National Guard out of Sycamore also fired a booming blast after each T-wolves (8-6-0) goal and the first one came 11:05 into the contest. Aaron Bolton's cross set up Shaquille Crayton for an eight-yarder from left of center.

"I was just sprinting to get open and once I got the ball, I kept thinking make a smart shot, make a smart shot," said Crayton, who had his team-best ninth goal in a return to being a field player after having stepped in as backup goalie for the past seven matches.

There was 5:55 left before halftime when Bret Ostrom set up Clayton Peterson for a five-yard strike from the right side and then defender Matt Kyler blasted an 18-yarder from out front with just 29.5 seconds left for the 3-0 intermission tally.

"I think a key today was the defense staying strong and getting the ball to the forwards, who then looked for their opportunities or fed it back, like the goal I got to score on," Kyler said. "As a senior, it's especially nice to get a homecoming win since we didn't win it in my three previous seasons."

Plano (4-9-2) head coach Ben Sperry wasn't able to witness much of the festivities or the match because a relatively mild dissent - "No way was that offside" - on the second of three debatable whistles resulted in not only a yellow, but a follow-up red-card expulsion from the referee at 16:28.
