Plainfield South beats Romeoville for first conference win

It was long a long time coming and probably way overdue, but Plainfield South finally did it.

The Cougars scored the last 10 points in Game 1 and continued to ride that momentum in Game 2 en route to a 25-15, 25-22 victory over Romeoville in Southwest Prairie Conference play Thursday night in Plainfield.

For the Cougars it was their first victory in SPC play this season.

Plainfield South (7-15,1-7) was led by senior outside hitter and captain Allison Waldvogel, who finished with four kills, three blocks and nine digs. The Cougars also had key contributions from Miranda LeJeune (three kills, two blocks), Deysha Thompson (10 digs) and Devon James (eight assists).

“I told our girls that they have to keep up their intensity because of what happened the first time that we played those girls,” Plainfield South coach Tony Sanchez said. “They are starting to understand, and they feel good about their first win.”

Waldvogel’s ace gave the Cougars a 14-9 lead in Game 1.

“We were really looking for a win tonight,” Waldvogel said. “We have been on a losing streak, so we were really pumped up for tonight.”

Romeoville battled back with a kill by Fizer to draw to within one point at 15-14.

Romeoville then tied the game at 15-15 and seemed to have momentum on its side only to then allow Plainfield South’s Devon James to serve the game out with 10 straight points (mostly on Spartan

unforced errors) for the 25-15 Game 1 win.

Romeoville opened Game 2 with a 3-1 lead. Wagner’s kill pulled Romeoville even at 14-14. Miranda LeJeune’s kill gave the Cougars a 15-14 lead. LeJeune’s third kill of the game extended the Cougars’

lead to 18-16.

“We wanted to start out the second half of the season strong and move forward,” Waldvogel said.”

A Romeoville error and ace by Plainfield South’s Jessica Sanchez gave the home team a 23-19 lead.

Plainfield South then sealed the victory with another Waldvogel kill and subsequent Romeoville return that went long.

Romeoville (11-11,3-4) was led by Rianna Wagner (five kills) and Latasha Fizer (five kills, two blocks).

“Overall we just did not play good, smart volleyball,” Romeoville coach Melanie Rellstab said. “They outhustled us. We just didn’t play solid volleyball, and it’s real disappointing.”
