Plainfield South holds on to top East

Usually, when a team scores, it’s a spark.
But, for which team?
During Tuesday’s Southwest Prairie Conference boys soccer match up between Plainfield South and Plainfield East, the Bengals’ tying goal in the second half sparked the Cougars to a 2-1 win.
Trailing 1-0, Plainfield East’s Jonathan Medina scored the equalizer off a Dominick Sullivan free kick with 30:07 to go in the second half.
Ninety seconds later, Plainfield South senior captain Colton Gallt scored his second goal of the game from Anthony Skrip to give the Cougars the hard-fought win over their District 202 rival.
“For some reason, we didn’t have any energy today,” Plainfield South coach Dave Brown said. “Even the first goal we scored was against the run of play in the first half. At halftime, we talked about, if they want to do something in the conference, they have to show it on the field.”
Gallt scored from Jeff Bond’s assist in the first half to stake Plainfield South (7-2-1, 2-0 in the SPC) a 1-0 lead at the intermission.
Plainfield East (4-5, 1-1) tied the game and could have seized the momentum.
“Getting scored on almost benefited us today a little bit,” Brown said. “That woke us up a little bit, put a fire in our belly and we came back.”
“We scored and we thought we had it,” Plainfield East coach Walter Flores said. “They did a nice job not letting us get the momentum after we scored.”
“Our team really came back strong after they scored,” Gallt said. “As a team, we played really well, especially in the second half.”
The winning goal came off a corner kick.
“It was bouncing around in the box, Skrip headed it back to me and I put it in,” Gallt said. “It was a good overall finish by the whole team today.”
“We know East is going to play scrappy and physical,” Brown said. “Today, we were one play better than them. That’s what it came down to today.”
“We had a lack of energy today and our touch wasn’t there,” Flores said. “We’ve been looking forward to this game for a long time. I’m not taking anything away from them. They did a nice job.”
