Plainfield North quietly racking up victories

Updated: April 25, 2011 11:06AM

Despite posting the best record in the Chicagoland area, so far, Plainfield North has yet to be ranked among the top 10 teams by any major metropolitan outlets.

That suits the Tigers just fine.

Hitters Jack Krieger and Peter Bednarz and setter Matt Guerreri, among others, have pushed Plainfield North to a 15-1 overall mark and 6-0 record in the Southwest Prairie Conference after beating upstart Plainfield Central last week on the road.

A win Tuesday at home against last year’s league champion Minooka (9-2, 4-1 in the SPC) would earn the Tigers some respect. Minooka took fourth in the state a year ago.

Speaking of the Indians, since losing its league opener to Romeoville (10-8-1, 3-3) they have run off fourth straight conference wins to set up Tuesday’s showdown.

The winner will have the inside track to the SPC championship and may earn a spot in the Chicagoland area’s top 10.

Minooka’s catalysts this year have been the likes of setter Jordan Smith, hitters Kevin Hannon, John Savickas and Brandon Toth and defensive specialist Pat O’Neill.

Providence Catholic is 9-4 overall, 4-1 in the Chicago Catholic League and may be hitting its mid-season stride.

Sophomore Brendan Surane has worked his way into the lineup at middle hitter and provided a spark. That moved Tim Sanders to the right side, which could solidify the Celtics’ lineup heading into the second half of the season.

Hitter Marty Ross and setter Karl Schramm have been consistently effective all season.
