Wrestling: Plainfield Central tops Plainfield South

After going through a rough grind, facing one of the state’s toughest schedules, Plainfield Central was hoping for a fun evening on its Senior Night.
That’s just what the Wildcats were able to do as they honored nine seniors before claiming a 66-12 Southwest Prairie Conference victory Thursday over Plainfield South.
The Wildcats (10-7) won all but one of the seven contested matches while getting six forfeit victories against the short-handed Cougars.
“We have nine seniors and all of them are four-year wrestlers,” Wildcats coach Jim Kappas said. “We’re very proud of that number since it’s the most that we’ve had since I’ve been here. Today was all about celebrating their accomplishments.
“For the last month, our competition has been top-tier. We’ve taken some lumps, but these guys believe in each other and know that they have our support. We’ll keep sticking together and working hard because our goal is the end of the year.”
Central opened with a 4-3 win from Tommy Kokkines over Danny Nguyen at 145 before Kyle Ledbetter got a pin in the following match.
“We’ve been through a rough stretch, but we know that we can take it as a team,” Ledbetter said. “I’ve taken a few poundings, but I’m not worried since it’s all about the end of the year. We know what it takes to get to state, and we want that to happen again.”
South answered with a pin from Jake Meeder over Mike Marro at 160 before Wendell Daviston got the first forfeit win for the hosts.
Jordan Ellingwood got a pin at 182, Nana Aikins claimed a 10-3 win at 195, Greg Cameron won a fall at 220 and Mike Farr got a forfeit win at heavyweight.
“Our coaches always push us hard and tell us to give more, even when you don’t think you have any more,” Aikins said. “The past month has been the hardest part of our season but the coaches planned it that way. We’re a tight-knit team. I love these guys.”
After Miguel Silva got a forfeit win at 106 for the Cougars, the Wildcats’ Dylan Cramer followed with a pin at 113 in the last contested match of the evening.
Central closed things out with forfeit wins from Clayton Ledbetter, Nick Nasenbeny, Nathan Davis and Ryan Holzrichter.
