Plainfield Central survived an emotionally-fueled, opening-week Southwest Prairie Conference match by posting a 3-0 win Wednesday over host Romeoville.
The game featured six yellow and two red cards.
“It wasn’t pretty,” Central coach Kevin Fitzgerald said. “They always play hard, have some skill are fast and quick. I thought our defense was good and it was nice to finish off a few.”
Plainfield Central (2-0, 1-0 in the SPC) made a statement when Eddie Rios scored off a nice feed from Miguel Duran with 26:41 to play in the first half.
Jon Iniguez scored with 38:07 to play in the second half to double the Wildcats’ advantage. Duran finished the scoring by putting home a Miguel Sanchez corner kick and subsequent scramble in front of the net with 25:44 to play in the second half.
“We just did one or two touches to the side, had good crossing passes and good finishes,” Duran said. “Our defense was real good tonight. They didn’t make a lot of errors. That gives us a lot of chances on offense.”
Goalkeeper Tyler Badertscher turned away 14 shots for the shutout.
“We played good defense and that’s our No. 1 goal each game,” Central captain Edgar Chavez said. “We want to get a shutout every game. Our defense will create our offense.”
Late in the game, Plainfield Central defender Nick Evans took down a Romeoville player surging toward the net. Being the last player back, by rule, Evans was given a red card and will miss Monday’s contest against Lincoln-Way Central in Plainfield.
“They are the defending champs and we were looking to make that statement and beat them,” Romeoville coach Nick Cirrincione said. “It didn’t happen today, but we have the rest of the season to prove ourselves.”
“Once they scored our heads went down,” Cirrincione said. “When they got the breaks, they scored. When we had chances, we didn’t score.”
Romeoville fell to 0-2, 0-1.
