Plainfield North needed a victory on homecoming to keep its playoff hopes alive Friday.
It didn’t matter how they got it, they just needed to get it. The answer to their 35-7 Southwest Prairie Conference win over Oswego East was the ground game.
Jay Roberts is listed as a wide receiver on the roster for the Tigers (4-4, 3-3), but one couldn’t tell by watching this game. He carried the ball 40 times in the running back role for 269 yards and two touchdowns. Although he couldn’t get past the line of scrimmage at times, fellow running back Mike Antos frequently bailed him out on short gains. Antos finished with three touchdowns and 43 yards rushing.
“The offensive line did a heck of a job opening up holes and creating the seams for me to get through,” said Roberts, who also had high accolades for his running partner. “Antos is a great running back. He can get in there and run for me the entire game.”
“It’s nice to be able to mix guys in and keep guys fresh and give other guys the opportunity to get in there and run the ball,” said coach Tim Kane. “I think we’ve got multiple guys who are hungry to carry it and run well and run hard.”
Oswego East (2-6, 0-6) didn’t score until the final few seconds of the contest, barely avoiding a shutout. That came via a 7-yard touchdown reception by receiver Conor Nally, who was brought up from the sophomore roster prior to the game.
Sean Kennedy led the Wolves on offense with 102 rushing yards. Most often, the ball went to running back Chris Cooper, who had 45 yards on 15 carries and also lost a fumble
