OSWEGO -- Plainfield North scored 13 points in the second quarter and made that stand for an important 13-6 Southwest Prairie Conference win over host Oswego East (2-5, 1-4 SPC) on Friday night.
The win improved the Tigers record to 3-4 overall and 3-2 in the conference and keeps their playoff hopes alive.
"We knew Plainfield North was a good team, but we felt confident going in with our option (attack)," Oswego East coach Mark Green said. "The key was that we had a couple of turnovers early. We were able to convert fourth down on our scoring drive. I'm really proud of our kids' effort. We did a good job defensively holding them to 13 points."
When the Tigers turned the ball over on their first possession of the game, fumbling the ball at their own 39-yard line, there was a sense that the turnover bug that has plagued Plainfield North this season had returned.
But Plainfield North's defense, which has been stingy all year, came to the rescue. The first two rushing plays from scrimmage for the hosts resulted in consecutive 1-yard losses. On third and 12, the Tigers' Matt Shulz deflected Josh Aceret's pass to force the Wolves to punt.
After taking over at its own 19, Plainfield North put together a 16-play drive that ended when the Tigers turned the ball over on downs at Oswego East's 11.
In the second half, the Wolves managed to put together a scoring drive. Taking possession late in the third quarter at its own 40, East converted three times on fourth down situations to keep the drive alive.
Steven Rivera scored on a 1-yard plunge with 6:10 remaining in the game, making it 13-6.
"I'm happy to get a win, but we had a bit of a letdown this week," Plainfield North coach Tim Kane said. "It is difficult to play at the level that we have been playing at, but you have to give Oswego East credit. They ran the ball on us in the second half and there hasn't been much of that this year."
