Mather's Gordon continues to dazzle

Maybe it shouldn’t be a surprise that outsiders don‘t know how good Kellion Gordon can be, because the Mather sophomore is just starting to figure that out herself.

“The sky is the limit for her,” Mather coach Dale DeVinney said. “I’m just trying to make her believe she can double-medal at the state meet. After last Saturday, she is starting to believe.”

A week after doing just that at the Prep Top Times Indoor Classic (including a win over Waubonsie Valley’s Shakeia Pinnock in the 200 meters), Gordon had another big day outdoors Saturday at Northside Prep’s Mustang Classic.

Gordon won the 100 (12.90 seconds) and 400 (1:02.87) and ran on the Rangers’ first-place 400 relay.

“It was kind of easy,” Gordon said of her day, though “when I’m running on the curves, the wind blows me down a bit.”

Gordon will concentrate on the 100 and 200 this spring, but DeVinney has bigger plans for 2010.

"She's going to start to learn the [400] this summer and then try to triple [medal at state] next year," DeVinney said.

Now that she's run the quarter a few times, Gordon is warming to the idea.

"I like it now," she said. "I'm getting used to it."

Her coach is glad to hear that. "Step one to conquering it is liking it," DeVinney said.

Northside, led by Maria Torres’ sweep of the long and triple jumps, beat Mather 113-64 for the girls’ title. Chequia Wesley, like Gordon a sophomore, won both hurdles for Mather.
