Wolves run wild in big victory

Updated: April 9, 2011 7:38PM

Boone Grove came out firing on all cylinders en route to a 15-3 victory over North Newton on Wednesday night.

The Wolves (3-1) were aggressive on the base paths the entire game, finishing with 12 stolen bases. Shortstop Jake Wright had five of those stolen bases to go along with two hits, two RBI and three runs.

"I have the mind-set to steal as many bases as I can," said Wright, whose five steals were a career-high.

Every Boone Grove starter finished with at least one hit. Left fielder Stefan Hess led the Wolves with a 3-for-3 day at the plate. He also had one RBI, one run and two stolen bases. Second baseman Jared Thill and right fielder Cody Poynter each had multi-hit performances for the Wolves. Poynter, center fielder Tommy Burton, and designated hitter A.J. Mosier each drove in two runs.

"Our offense is starting to come around," said Boone Grove coach Rollie Thill. "A lot of these guys sat behind great players last year, and now they are getting an opportunity to play. They all want to step up and take advantage."

Lost in all of the offense was the solid performance by Wolves starting pitcher Zach Wein. Wein went four strong innings, allowing four hits and one run, while walking two and striking out four. The win was Wein's first of the season.

Not a whole lot went well for the Spartans, but Coach Greg Mikulich chalked that up to inexperience.

"We're inexperienced and young on the mound," Mikulich said. "But we came into this game with a plan to give certain guys time on the mound, and we did just that. I think the experience from this game will help us in the future."

The Spartans struggled early, but were able to tack on a couple runs in their final frame. Shortstop Chad Schultz led the way, going 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run.
