Girls Basketball: Haley Videckis leads Bartlett past North Chicago

Updated: November 18, 2011 9:57PM

Bartlett senior Haley Videckis scoring output in the second quarter was below average, not scoring a single point.

Of course, that’s because she had a nice view of the action from the bench after hitting her first six shots and first five threes in a 19-point first quarter to lead the Hawks to a crushing 87-17 win over North Chicago in the second game of the Naperville Central Tip-off Classic.

“I was just really ready to go today,” said Videckis, who finished with 21 points, three steals and three assists in limited playing time. “The Thanksgiving tournament is big for us. I want to push myself in every single game and the team did a great job of pushing it up the floor and finding the open player.”

Inexplicably, it was Videckis constantly wide open as she rained down points in Bartlett’s 30 point first quarter.

“She shoots extremely well,” Warhawks coach Laurence Brown said. “She was open and she wasn’t missing. I guess our girls just didn’t come ready to play tonight. We’re a much better team from what I’ve seen.”

North Chicago (1-1) beat Waukegan in its season opener, but was in for a world of pain once it didn’t cover Videckis.

And it wasn’t just her as three other Bartlett starters joined her in double figures, while the bench combined to score 32 points as well.

Kristin Conniff and Katie Gutzwiller each scored 11 and Lisa Palmer had 10, while Elizabeth Arco and Chantel Zasada score nine off the bench.

Nobody seemed to miss and Bartlett (2-0) was proficient passing, running a fastbreak or working the secondary break.

“It was a good day,” Hawks coach Denise Sarna said. “The ball went in. Everything seemed to fall for us. It was nice to get everyone some minutes early on in the season.”

Sarna had a wry smile on her face, knowing the road will get bumpy along the way and not always be such an easy win.

Brown, however, pulled his two best players off the floor in the second quarter after an argument with each other as the defensive unit kept breaking down, and they did not return.

One, Darniqua Hood scored all seven of the Warhawks points in the first quarter, but it really didn’t matter who was on the floor. Bartlett was a different animal.

“Tonight, we were just a whole different team,” Brown said. “I was surprised. Running up and down, we’re probably the quickest team around, but we did not show it. And that was that.”
