Josh Gaido rushed for four touchdowns and David Tomis booted four consecutive extra-point kicks to carry Lakes’s improving squad past fading North Chicago 28-26 on Friday in a North Suburban Conference Prairie Division football game.
Gaido scored on runs of 32, 2, 1 and 5 yards — scoring twice in each half.
His final TD made it a 28-12 game and enabled the Eagles to hold on despite two late touchdowns by North Chicago (1-5).
North Chicago scored on a nine-yard TD pass from DeShawn Chambliss to Marquis Miller’s with 6:41 left and on an eight-yard TD pass from Chambliss to Wallace Arrington with 21 seconds left.
However, the two-point conversion pass after Miller’s TD failed. That, along with extra-point failures after their first two scores, doomed the Hawks and eliminated them from playoff contention with three games still to go in the season.
Lakes took advantage of a trio of North Chicago turnovers to build an early 14-0 lead on a pair of TD runs by Gaido.
The Warhawks got their offense going late in the first quarter when Miller caught a 44-yard touchdown pass from to cut the lead to 14-6.
With 6:41 left in the second quarter, Jimon Hill broke a 69-yard TD run for North Chicago, but once again a conversion attempt failed and the Hawks trailed 14-12 at halftime.
