Driven by the dynamic rushing duo of Doug Ivy and Noel Duckworth, Gordon Tech went all the way to Indiana to beat Seton Academy 27-6 last Saturday.
Both Ivy and Duckworth surpassed 100 yards rushing on the ground, wearing down the Seton defense and propping up the Rams hopes of continuing their season into the Prep Bowl.
"All in all a good game," Gordon Tech head coach Bill Jeske said.
Quarterback Tom Quintus paced the attack and kept the offense rolling steadily along in the game played in Hammond, Ind.
"Tom did a nice job, did what he had to do to get us the win," Jeske said.
Once the Rams had a lead the defense dominated the game, led by eight tackles apiece from John Brown, John Macias, and Brandon Cruz.
John Petty pounded Seton's offensive line and made his way into the backfield for three sacks in the win. Cavalas Blanks brought his usual "A" game and also dominated the line once again, recording two sacks himself.
Gordon Tech now moves to 2-4 overall, and 2-2 in the Catholic Green conference.
The Rams play Providence Catholic, 7:30 p.m. Friday at North Park University.
Roosevelt 27 Noble Street Charter 20
Excited after narrowly defeating Noble Street on Saturday, Roosevelt had a hard time staying happy since the game nearly slipped away.
Roosevelt (3-3, 3-2 Inter-City North) held a double-digit lead for most of three quarters before Noble Street roared back and came within a few yards of dampening the Rough Riders' chances.
"It was a really weird feeling after the game," Rough Riders coach Nick Diedrich said. "Last week was such an emotional win, this week -- we were not disappointed but we were not happy with the win. We knew we made mistakes that could've cost us the game. I expected to do better than we did."
Middle linebacker Andres Lopez did all he could to guide the mostly consistent defense.
"Andres made a lot of nice open field tackles," Diedrich said. "The defense played well throughout the game. "
With the game scoreless after one quarter Jamar Evans entered for Roosevelt and immediately impacted the game.
On fourth down and one, Roosevelt coach Nick Diedrich decided to not punt and go for it.
Evans rewarded the decision, easily gaining the first down and continuing on down the field for an explosive and exhilarating 50-yard touchdown run.
Roosevelt scored again when Nathan Jimenez found the end zone on a six-yard run, good for a 13-0 lead in the second quarter.
Noble Street struck back, returning the ensuing kick off for a touchdown and 13-6 game.
Roosevelt carried a 16-6 lead into halftime following a Chris Espino field goal, but the team felt it could be doing much more.
The first play after the break Sergio Montoya made a huge momentum swing possible by intercepting a pass and running it back 40 yards to the one-yard line. Quarterback Edwin Rodriguez finished the swing with a touchdown plunge, and a two-point conversion gave Roosevelt a comfortable 24-6 lead.
Then again a kickoff was taken all the way back for a touchdown, and just like that the lead was cut in half 24-12.
Espino would add another field goal to make it 27-12.
With just 50 seconds left in the game, Noble Street marched down field and scored to bring them within 27-20.
Though the team played well throughout most of the game, slip-ups and penalties almost made the comeback possible, leaving the team somewhat stunned.
The entire offensive line of Roosevelt was honored as the offensive player of the week by Diedrich after they helped the team control the time of possession and flow of the game.
"Really good job controlling the line, just made some mistakes we need sharpen up for next week," Diedrich said.
Roosevelt plays Lindblom, 11 a.m. Saturday at Stagg Stadium.
