Niles West and New Trier entered Friday night’s CSL South game in Winnetka needing a win to get heading back in the right direction.

The No. 24 Trevians got that with some help from Maggie Lyon, defeating the No. 21 Wolves 56-43.

New Trier (14-7, 3-4) had dropped three in a row heading into Friday’s game and five of its last six, The Trevians broke that skid with a strong start and by persevering after Notre Dame signee Jewell Loyd led a rally for the visitors.

“Our goal today was to focus for all four quarters, never give up and just show everyone the team that we really are,” Lyon said. “We wanted to come out and really make a statement. We wanted to show that we are still one of the better teams in the conference.”

The Northwestern-bound Lyon, who led all scorers with 29 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, hit a pair of early three-pointers to spark an opening 13-0 run. Niles West aided the Trevians’ start by missing its first six shots and by committing six turnovers in the first 4:09.

After missing her first seven shots, Loyd got Niles West (16-7, 5-2) back into the game by scoring 10 of her 26 points during a 16-1 run. That surge gave the Wolves a 26-25 lead with 3:53 left in the third quarter, but they couldn’t take control from there en route to their third straight defeat.

That’s because Lyon scored 10 points during a 14-3 run. She also hit seven of her eight free throws in the final 3:55. Loyd, meanwhile, fouled out with 3:46 remaining and finished with a game-high 16 rebounds.
