Maine South’s Matt Alviti took it to Niles West from the get-go Friday night, throwing five touchdown passes as the No. 1 Hawks steamrolled the Wolves 55-15 in a Central Suburban League South contest in Skokie.
“I thought I played pretty well,” Alviti said. “We executed but I need to get the ball out of my hand a little quicker and not take the hits I did. You just have to stay within yourself and play Maine South football.”
Maine South (6-0, 2-0) raced out to a quick 14-0 lead thanks to a pair of Alviti touchdown passes. The junior (17 of 25, 287 yards) hooked up with Ian Catalano for a one-yard score and Paul Preston for a six-yard touchdown.
A bad snap resulting in a safety got Niles West (2-4, 0-2) on the scoreboard with 2:08 remaining in the first quarter.
The Wolves made it a little more interesting as Jeremiah Jordan took the ensuing kickoff 69 yards for a score to pull Niles West within 14-9 with 1:56 left in the first.
The Wolves were able to get a stop and had a chance to take the lead but three straight three-and-outs would lead to three straight touchdowns by the Hawks.
Preston (eight carries for 108 yards, five catches for 88 yards) scored on runs of one yard and 80 yards while also catching an 11-yard touchdown pass from Alviti to give Maine South a 35-9 halftime advantage.
The Hawks outgained Niles West 345-65 on offense in the first-half. Lightning just before the second half resulted in a 32-minute delay.
After the break, Maine South picked up where it left off as Alviti tossed his fourth touchdown of the night, this one a 53-yard strike to Steve Sagerstrom.
Alviti’s fifth touchdown pass of the night, a 16-yarder to Catalano got the running clock started and ended the night for many of the Hawks’ starters.
Chris Buscemi finished the scoring for Maine South with a 10-yard run in the fourth quarter.
The Wolves’ Mike McGivern connected with Jordan on a 76-yard touchdown for the final score of the game.
