Maine South scored early and often, putting up 42 first-quarter

points, in Friday night's 55-21 win over Niles West in the CSL South opener

in Park Ridge.

The Hawks (3-2, 1-0) were led by sophomore quarterback Matt Alviti, who

played only five series, but finished 12-for-13 passing for 234 yards and

two touchdowns. Junior running back Paul Preston had four carries for 119

yards and three touchdowns. And senior receiver Scott Derrick caught a pair

of 60-yard touchdowns.

"Obviously, offensively we were pretty good. Defensively (after giving up a

long touchdown on the first defensive play) we were pretty good," Niles West

head coach David Inserra said. "(Alviti) is getting better, getting more

confident and more consistency with the whole offense, getting in sync with

the receivers."

Niles West senior quarterback Seve Loubriel hit senior receiver David McCoy

over the middle for a 74-yard touchdown on the Wolves' first offensive play,

which tied the score 7-7.

West (1-4, 0-1) trailed 42-7 after one quarter, but got a 68-yard touchdown

run from senior David Galimore midway through the second quarter.

The score was 48-14 at halftime and the Wolves' starters battled against the

Hawks backups for much of the second half.

Despite the lopsided score, West head coach Scott Baum was pleased with his

team's effort.

"We didn't play (with as much effort) in a couple games," Baum said. "We

talk about coaching effort. When we have to coach effort, we don't get to

coach football. Tonight. we got to coach a little football. We played a

little harder than we have been, and you have to against a team like (Maine

South)."

Maine South's backup quarterback Jimmy Frankos, a senior, came in for Alviti

late in the first quarter and finished out the half. He completed 4-of-6

passes for 60 yards, throwing a 17-yard touchdown pass to senior Luke

Mottley.

Hawks' junior Joe Schmit had a two-yard run, while third-string quarterback

Matt Cherven, a senior, completed a 45-yard touchdown pass to junior Connor

Mathisen in the second half.

Niles West's Galimore rushed for a 10-yard touchdown in the second half.

Maine South visits Evanston at 7:30 p.m. next Friday. Niles West welcomes

New Trier to Skokie at 7 p.m. Friday.
