New Trier lost a fumble on its first play of the game, but the Trevians didn’t make too many more mistakes Friday on their way to a 24-7 win over Evanston on the road.
New Trier (5-3 overall, 2-2 CSL South) turned three turnovers into 17 points to keep its postseason hopes alive one more week.
“Our playoffs started this week,” said senior defensive back Josh Perlmutter. “I think we need to get to 6-3, so we needed this win.”
Up 10-0 at the half, New Trier found itself in a fight to start the second half. Evanston took the opening kick, and Ray Bahr scored on a one-yard run 12 plays later to leave the score 10-7. The senior Bahr ran 23 times for 96 yards.
The Wildkits were on the move again early in the fourth quarter, but they lost their third fumble of the game to stop the series.
Jack Nykaza and New Trier took advantage. The quarterback ran seven times for 47 yards and scored on a two-yard run to push the advantage back to 10 points.
Chris Hall then intercepted a pass on Evanston’s next possession, and the Trevians put the game away for good on Devin Boehm’s 14-yard touchdown run.
Nykaza carried the ball 19 times for 62 yards and went 9-for-14 for 100 yards. He threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Will Fitzgerald in the first half.
“I don’t think there was anything we could have done better on defense,” Perlmutter said.
While the Trevians look to secure their spot in the playoffs with a win over Waukegan, Evanston definitely is in a must-win situation next week against Niles West after its second consecutive loss.
