New Trier coach Dan Starkey looked at all the positives from Friday’s 40-24 loss to top-ranked Maine South.
The Trevians clearly outplayed the Hawks in the first half in Northfield and led 24-14 at intermission. Senior receiver Christian Carr and junior running back Daniel Olaniyan earned star recognition for their performances before the break, as did the defense and kicker Grant Amick.
But the second half was a different story. The Trevians were outscored 26-0 and made several mistakes that contributed to the defeat.
“Obviously, they are a great team,” said Starkey, whose team had its three-game win streak snapped to fall to 3-2 overall and 0-1 in the CSL South. “We did some really great things, but we have to learn to sustain that over four quarters in order to have a great season. We hope to rebound this week.”
For a half, the Trevians, who were the last team to beat the Hawks in league play back in 2000 — and 51 games ago — looked unbeatable.
They forced a three-and-out on Maine South’s first series and marched down the field to take a 7-0 lead. New Trier never trailed in the first half and led by 10 twice, the second time coming on Olaniyan’s 73-yard TD run late in the second quarter. The junior rushed for 143 yards in the first half.
“Daniel is emerging as a go-to guy,” Starkey said. “He had a great game Friday. He broke tackles and played with pride. I hope he can do that the rest of the year.”
Carr also shined in the first half Friday. He caught five passes for 78 yards and finished with seven catches for 134 yards.
“We expect even more out of Christian,” the coach said of the team’s kickoff and punt returner. “We definitely have some weapons on offense. We can spread the ball over the field and make plays.”
New Trier got nothing going in the second half. The Trevians went three-and-out on their first three possessions and had a punt blocked. Shortly after New Trier earned its initial first down of the second half, the Trevians fumbled on the first play of the fourth quarter.
Maine South followed with one of Matt Alviti’s four TD passes in the second half to help the Hawks to a 33-24 lead.
“We took those guys seriously,” Maine South coach Dave Inserra said of the Trevians. “They had a great game plan, and they did some things we hadn’t seen. They played physical and fast, and we just had to match that passion. We had to believe in ourselves after they gave us that punch.”
New Trier turns its attention to Glenbrook South (4-1, 1-0) which defeated Evanston 26-7. The Trevians have dropped four straight to the Titans since defeating Glenbrook South 46-45 victory in 2006.
“Our emphasis this week will be on sustaining our execution for four quarters,” Starkey said. “Hopefully, we can build on the Maine South game because Glenbrook South is a big challenge for us.”
