Luis Sanchez rushed for two touchdowns as St. Patrick jumped to a 21-point halftime lead and shocked No. 13 New Trier 42-21 on Friday night at Hanson Stadium.
Sanchez (21 carries, 77 yards) scored on runs of five and three yards before Adam Nitsche galloped 82 yards for a score to give the Shamrocks a 21-0 halftime lead.''This was an important win for us, beating a quality team like New Trier,'' St. Patrick coach Dan Galante said. ''We kept the ball away from them throughout the first half, and we were able to establish our ground game.''
The Shamrocks (1-1) held a 16:07-7:53 time-of-possession advantage in the first half en route to amassing 242 yards.
The Trevians opened the second-half scoring with George Brigandi plunging in from one yard to cap a 66-yard drive. But the Shamrocks sealed the victory when Patrick Whalen scored on a two-yard run, and Mike Fabrizio tossed a 49-yard touchdown pass to Jeff Dohnal.
The Shamrocks completed the scoring when Mike Labeck returned an interception 62 yards.
Dillon Napoleon was 5-for-15 for 113 yards, including a 64-yard touchdown pass to Jon Michaels for the Trevians (1-1).
''After losing to Notre Dame [34-14] last week, our kids really believed they could do this,'' Galante said. ''They never lost faith.''
