Glenbrook North ends Trevians' run
Chris Cooper gathered his team at one corner of the gym after Friday's straight-set victory over No. 5-ranked New Trier.
The Glenbrook North coach's message was clear. If the Spartans play
like they did in the 25-20, 25-16 win, not many teams will be able to
beat them.
"He expects that every time we play," said senior outside hitter Glen Song, who tied Scott Schwartz for a team-best six kills. "We played smooth and kept the energy level up. Our expectations are high this year, and we have a lot of talent."
Song's ace capped a 4-0 run late in the first set that gave Glenbrook
North the early advantage.
The Spartans (10-3) never trailed in the second set, taking charge
with a 7-0 surge for a 20-10 run.
Behind Alex Cook's big jump-serve, the Trevians (12-3) answered with a 5-0 stretch, but they couldn't get closer than five. The loss snapped the team's seven-match win streak.
Trevor Ponticelli came through with two kills to get the Spartans to
match point before a New Trier hitting error ended the match.
"We didn't really execute as cleanly as we would have liked," said New Trier middle hitter Bennett Wakenight. "We had a bunch of serving
errors and hitting errors, and they all added up to a loss."
Setters Kyle Bedford and Danny Slutsky spread out the Spartans
offense. Six players had at least three kills. Luke Jacobson and Pat
Bedford each had four kills, while Kyle Bedford and Ponticelli both
finished with three.
Andrew Gates paced the Trevians with eight kills, while Jesse Solomon added six kills and five assists.
"This is always a big match because the players know each other,"
Cooper said. "It's a grudge match."
