New Trier boys team suffering through rough stretch

Last week wasn’t a good one for the New Trier boys soccer team.
First, the Trevians fell to rival Evanston for the first time since 2003, and followed with a loss to Glenbrook South, dropping the team to 1-2 in CSL South play. New Trier now is in danger of suffering its first losing season in a decade.
The Titans took it to the Trevians early and didn’t let up in a 5-1 victory in Glenview.
“This was a win to remember,” said Glenbrook South coach Paul Agombar of beating the Trevians, who won state titles in 2006 and ’08. “It showed us what we are capable of doing on any given day. If we play to our strengths, this is what we can do.”
Glenbrook South went up 2-0 and led 4-1 at the half. Branden McGarrity scored twice, and Luis Batista and Anestis Gavriilopoulos also had goals.
Sophomore Jeff Farina scored New Trier’s lone goal in the loss, which left the Trevians at 3-7-1 overall. New Trier finished 8-8-9 last season.
“We did outplay them a bit,” said McGarrity, Glenbrook South’s leading scorer. “We came out and got those early goals.”
Agombar said the Titans capitalized on their opportunities against a rookie goalie in freshman Niko Katsinis.
“We took our chances,” the coach said. “The strength of our team is our offense, and we put the ball in situations where we could make a difference.”
Glenbrook South got a goal three minutes into the second half from Kosta Brkovic, adding to its advantage.
Glenbrook South entered the week in second place in conference behind undefeated Evanston. The Trevians, who went 1-2-2 in league play last year, were scheduled to play Waukegan on Tuesday and will face Niles West on Friday.
Two days before the loss to the Titans, the Trevians fell to the Wildkits 3-1. Once again, Farina scored the team’s only goal.
