McGarrity’s double leads Glenbrook South

Save for a kick to the shin, nothing was going to wipe the smile off Branden McGarrity’s face Thursday.

The Glenbrook South senior midfielder scored two goals in the team’s 5-1 victory over New Trier in Glenview.

“We did outplay them a bit,” said McGarrity, the Titans’ leading scorer. “We came out and got those early goals.”

Glenbrook South jumped out to a 2-0 and led 4-1 at the half to keep its grip on second place in the CSL South. The Titans improved to 6-4-2 overall and 3-1 in league play. Evanston leads the standings at 4-0 after Thursday’s 3-1 win over Maine South.

“We took our chances,” Glenbrook South coach Paul Agombar said. “The strength of our team is our offense, and we put the ball in situations where we were could make a difference.

“And Branden’s been fantastic. But it was our whole team getting the ball to areas where we could take advantage.”

The Titans added to their lead on Kosta Brkovic’s goal three minutes into the second half past New Trier freshman goalie Niko Katsinis. Luis Batista and Anestis Gavriilopoulos scored Glenbrook South’s other two goals.

Jeff Farina scored New Trier’s lone goal in the loss that dropped the Trevians to 3-7-1 and 1-2 in the conference. Earlier in the week, New Trier lost to Evanston for the first time since 2003.

“Evanston needs to lose for us to tie, but that’s not important to us when we’re on the field,” McGarrity said. “But this is a big win for us, and it gives us momentum.”

Glenbrook South closes out the conference schedule Monday against Maine South. New Trier plays Waukegan and Niles West next week.

“This was a win to remember,” Agombar said of beating the Trevians, who won state titles in 2006 and 2008. “It showed us what we are capable of doing on any given day. If we play to our strengths, this is what we can do.”
