Boys Basketball: New Trier outlasts Glenbrook South

Selflessness was the name of the game and the difference for the top team in the Central Suburban League.

Despite being outrebounded, No. 6 New Trier (18-2, 7-0 CSL) outlasted Glenbrook South (5-14, 1-6 CSL) in Glenview Friday night for the 60-54 conference win.

“I don’t think we played particularly well,” said NT head coach Scott Fricke. “I was really happy with the amount of assists we had tonight; we shared the ball and I thought we got some pretty good opportunities.”

The Trevians held on to a 32-30 lead at the half with senior center Connor Boehm contributing 11 points.

New Trier exited the first quarter with a 16-12 advantage, but the Titans exploded in the second period.

GBS reeled off 12 unanswered points to give themselves a 24-18 lead with big buckets from senior guard Jamie Nikitas and junior guard Justin Busiel.

Down six points, the Trevians went back to Boehm who helped his team pull ahead with a few minutes remaining in the opening 16 minutes.

The Titans’ difficulties in the third quarter continued and that is where the game was won for New Trier.

Junior guard Steven Cook proved to be the difference with nine points in the quarter to guide his team to a 48-38 lead with just eight minutes remaining.

“We can really develop from this game,” said Cook. “We can learn a lot by watching film and see plenty of mistakes and I didn’t think we played as a team tonight, but I think we can grow more as a team based on how we played.”

GBS could only cut the deficit to four in the final period and with an extra effort from junior and sophomore guards Reid Berman and Jordan Thomas, the Trevians held on for the victory.

“We never allowed it to be a one possession game and we always had some control, but [GBS] played hard,” said Fricke. “The one thing I’m not happy about is they outrebounded us and that’s something we’ve been doing a really good job on this year. That could have been the difference in the game.”

Boehm led all scorers with 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds while Cook dropped 15 and added another eight boards for New Trier.

Senior forward Victor Levi led the charge for the Titans as he scored 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds.

Next up for the Trevians is Waukegan at home next Friday while GBS will stay at home for Schaumburg on Tuesday.
