It was a good night for Hinsdale Central thanks to Mark Knight on Friday at North Central College in Naperville.

The forward’s ninth goal of the season with 6:19 to play in the second overtime propelled the Red Devils to a 2-1 victory over New Trier in the Class AA state quarterfinals.

It also propelled his squad into today's 11 a.m. semifinal against Barrington (23-2) while ending the Trevians' hopes of repeating as state champs.

"I was just feeling it when I saw the ball," said Knight, who headed home Jason Loebig's assist.

Another reason why it was a good night for Knight and Co. was due to the play of goalie John Shakon. The senior stood on his head at times to make sure the Trevians wouldn't avenge a 2-0 loss to the Red Devils earlier in the season.

"It's great to turn around and see him standing behind me," said Hinsdale Central defender David Tiemstra, who scored the game's first goal with 15:32 to play in regulation. "He made some great saves tonight out of nowhere."

Chris Ritter tallied the lone goal for New Trier (21-3-1), which also lost to Hinsdale Central 2-0 in 2006.

"That was a great team we just beat, and now we're going to face another great team [in Barrington]," Shakon said.
