The vocal Joliet Catholic student section responded with a “Drop the hammer’’ chant when the host Angels built a 9-2 lead Tuesday night over Nazareth in the first game of the Class 3A Joliet Catholic Sectional semifinal.

It became a “Fire up Angels, fire up’’ cheer when the lead shrank to 12-9, but the Angels responded with a 5-0 run and went on to a 25-16, 25-21 victory, their second this season over Nazareth.

“I thought we came out strong in Game 1,’’ Joliet Catholic coach Christine Scheibe said. “That’s something that we’ve been talking about, coming out and establishing the tempo of the game.’’

Joliet Catholic (32-7) will host St. Francis (32-6) at 7 p.m. Thursday for the sectional championship, looking for a start similar to Tuesday’s match.

“I thought we were passing well so we were able to run our offense,’’ Scheibe said of the opening game. “Some of our girls got some big blocks at the beginning of Game 1. That really helped. And our hitters were just solid and consistent.’’

Joliet Catholic fell behind 6-0 and 7-1 in Game 2, but later closed the margins to 8-6 and 10-8. The game then was tied six times, including 18-all. Back-to-back kills by Morgan Reardon and Hailey Pennington ended the match.

“The girls did a nice job of composing themselves and coming back to close out that gap at the beginning of the game and just got it back point by point,’’ Scheibe said.

Joliet Catholic had key contributions from Reardon (8 kills, 2 blocks), Pennington (7 kills), Kelly Feigh (6 kills, 12 digs), Emily Schoenstedt (11 assists), Lauren Robertson (9 assists) and Jillian Hickey (7 digs). Reardon has 305 kills for the season.

“I had a good feeling,’’ Scheibe said. “I never got too panicky. I thought the girls did a nice job of being steady.’’
