SOCCER: The Nazareth boys soccer team may not have ended the regular season the way it was hoping, but the Roadrunners already achieved two of their three main goals.
Nazareth lost to Benet 5-0 Saturday to fall to 7-11-1 overall and finish 1-8 in the East Suburban Catholic Conference.
"We wanted to better last year's record (6-14) and get a conference win," Nazareth coach Doug Hunt said. "The third goal is still out there and that's to get at least one win in the postseason."
Nazareth is seeded seventh in the Class 2A Riverside-Brookfield Sectional and will play host to No. 11 seed Montini in the Nazareth Regional semifinals Tuesday, Oct. 21.
The Roadrunners also lost games to the top-two teams in the ESCC, falling to St. Viator 5-0 Oct. 8 and St. Joseph 6-0 Oct. 6.
The Roadrunners finished 3-0 in pool play, beating Glenbrook North 25-12, 16-25, 15-13, Leyden 25-21, 25-16 and Maine South 18-25, 25-23, 15-7 before falling to Evanston 25-22, 19-25, 25-17 in the semifinals and New Trier 25-21, 23-25, 25-20 in the third-place match.
Nazareth (17-16) was led by Keara Luehrsen (21 kills, 4 blocks, 7 aces), Jill Paluch (118 assists, 19 kills, 3 blocks, 11 aces), Jennifer Milligan (19 kills, 2 blocks, 10 aces), Brittany Brown (15 kills, 3 blocks, 3 aces), Stephanie Polich (12 kills, 5 aces), Colleen McCollom (8 kills, 10 blocks, 7 aces), Jane Schiffler (7 kills) and Kirsten Pope (3 kills, 6 blocks).
Nazareth also improved to 2-5 in the East Suburban Catholic Conference by beating Fenwick 25-13, 25-22 Oct. 9 in LaGrange Park behind Paluch (22 assists, 2 kills), Luehrsen (8 kills), Milligan (7 kills) and Brown (4 kills, 2 blocks).
• St. Joseph (6-22) lost to Glenbard West 25-19, 25-12 and Trinity 25-12, 25-8 Oct. 6 and fell to undefeated Benet 25-9, 25-13 Oct. 7 to remain winless in East Suburban Catholic Conference play.
On Oct. 7, Nazareth (209 points) and St. Joseph (300) were ninth and 10th at the boys ESCC Pre-Championship Meet 2 at Midlothian Meadow.
Nazareth's Steve Drent was 17th (17 minutes, 13 seconds for 3.0 miles), followed by Brian Moreno (42nd, 18:26), Joe Parenti (61st, 19:16), Tim Malhosky (63rd, 19:26), Ryan Kohs (87th, 20:44), Charlie Bezouska (89th, 21:00) and Matt Duff (91st, 21:04).
David Anderson (65th, 19:28), Darrion Jackson (71st, 19:53), Angelo Calcagno (99th, 23:18), Kevin Householder (109th, 24:38), Devonte Edwards (111th, 24:53), Jamal Khalaf (116th, 26:20) and James Arriola (118th, 27:31) competed for the Chargers.
On Saturday, the St. Joseph boys were ninth (287) at the Benet Invitational with Edwards (60th, 24:19), Householder (61st, 24:40), Khalaf (63rd, 25:20), Jose Gonzalez (64th, 25:23), Jackson (65th, 26:42) and Arriola (66th, 26:58). Margeaux Cilc (27:12) was 75th in the varsity girls race.
